Can't believe I'm the only one to be miss advised by Amazon and influenced into buying a windscreen holder and 12v charger when they are already included with unit in box!?! Don't be fooled by the 'buy together' offer!!! Thanks Amazon.....Twerps!!! Otherwise happy!
Bar Humbug!

P.s Dearest Joyce, you may drive to the speed limits but you are responsible for safty whilst driving at 70mph on the M5! DON'T PLAY WITH THE NAV!...WATCH FOR THE BUMPS AND PULL OVER DEAR!!....Der!!!!

Excellent - but you still need a brain, you know. Rating stars Sent: 20 November 2008
We've been using Tom Tom for years on a PDA. We recently bought the Tom Tom XL UK for my mother (age young 75) and she can use it easily, the screen is big and clear and the controls are easy to understand.

Yes there are occasional map errors but just so long as you haven't given up using your brain altogether then these aren't usually a problem. We programmed it with the address of a new Ikea. When we came off the motorway junction there was a big Ikea sign pointing right but the sat nav said left - my husband turned left (I kept my mouth shut for once) and we came across a street that had been made one way after the store was built! Also just be a little extra careful if you tow a caravan or drive a lorry it may very occasionally send you down a short cut that isn't suitable (very rare though!).

The thing I always say is that it's like a much better version of a map (which you can't read whilst driving anyway) - but you still should try and have an overview of your journey and keep a eye on road signs - it's not like putting the car or your brain on automatic pilot.

I find it particularly useful when I have to go to meetings in unfamiliar places. Sometimes in city centres it isn't always easy to work out which lane you should be in but it does help. The best thing is that you are confident that even if you do take a wrong turn it will recalculate the route and get you back on track in no time.

I particularly like the estimated time of arrival which I find very accurate. It takes away the panic and urge to drive fast if you have been held up as I usually find I am still going to make it in time anyway - alternatively I can ring ahead (pulling over first of course) and give them a pretty good estimate of my arrival time.

I also love the speed and limit indication. I'm particular about not breaking the limit but sometimes in unfamiliar areas it's hard to know what the limit is. I think this technology should be standard on all cars with a warning when we go above the limit because I believe many people who speed don't do so intentionally.

I also really like the Tom Tom from a passenger's point of view. If he gets it wrong my husband now shouts at the Tom Tom not me! ;o)

I've got the XL Europe on my wish list for Christmas as I'm fed up of borrowing everyone elses.

Good Value. Rating stars Sent: 20 November 2008
This item is Good value when there are so many sat-navs out there at the moment, it has clear and understandable turn on and go touch screen instructions. All most fool proof. Be aware though Amazon tries to get you to buy a windscreen fitting and car charger seperately and it all ready has one in the box.

Well pleased Rating stars Sent: 19 November 2008
Bought this for my partner, found it very easy to use for a beginner,
I borrowed it to go with friends, from Devon to Bury St Edmunds, although it wouldn't take us via the M5/M42 it was easy enough to do 2 route plans & it took us there easy.
Nice to have the warning when speeding & the camera alerts also nice to have choice of male/female voices.

TomTom One XL Rating stars Sent: 19 October 2008
I resently bought the TomTom One XL with the extras (case, traffic & european maps) This is the first sat nav ive owned and so far I cant fault it.
I have read a number of reviews of problems with the XL's window mount being difficult to put the sat nav on and off, but the simple solution I found right away was to turn the mount head 90degrees one way, slide your sat nav on, then straighten back upright.

Am very glad to have gotten the case with mine as is something I would have had to buy and am always using it to store in.

The traffic extra I didnt realise that you have to pay a subscription fee to get this. So even though I have the cable I wont be using it as Im not going to be paying £30 a year for traffic updates or £35 a year for traffic and speed cameras. If I had realised this I wouldnt have bother with that so much.

The European Maps will be good but I cant see me using them much at all.

The thing that confused me the most when shopping for a sat nav was that TomTom seem to have changed the One XL from a yellow box to an blue box. One is called One XL GB and the other One XL Classic - basically the same thing but the 'Classic' is the new name and box. Had to go into a shop to find out I had been looking at the same thing just old and new packaging as couldnt find the information anywhere!

Only other thing is I wish that when you add a favorite address you could put the name of the place of that address in, and share that information as part of map-share. For eg - two of my local cinemas arent listed and when Ive put in the postcodes, although it finds the place I cant then add 'Odeon'. And i noticed that it still has listed postoffices that are no longer open (as part of all the smaller ones getting closed). These sort of updates would be very usefull to share too.

All in all great sat nav, and cant wait to use on a long journey.
