Product Description Sony has launched a powerful bridge camera that's great value for money with the Cyber-Shot DSC-H50B. This digital camera has everything you need to take breathtaking photos, including a 9.1-megapixel CCD sensor, a Carl Zeiss lens, a powerful 15x optical zoom and an image stabiliser that compensates for the effects of camera shake. It has excellent response times too, thanks to the in-built BIONZ processor, and a burst mode that takes an incredible 100 shots every 0.64 seconds ? you won't miss any of the action! Thanks to the scene recognition mode, the camera automatically adjusts the settings for the best results. It also has smile and face detection modes, which bring out the best in your subjects in portrait or group shots. It's easy to monitor your shots on the DSC-H50B''s large, 3-inch LCD screen ? it even rotates, so you can take pictures from all kinds of different angles! As for connectivity, this camera has an audio/video socket, an HD output and a USB port, so you can hook it up to different devices. Photography fans will be bowled over by everything the DSC-H50B has to offer!
great camera Sent: 14 October 2008 had this 3 months now and i am very pleased with it.
adjustable screen is fantastic making it very easy to get low angle shots or shots with the camera held above your head.
15x zoom is great and super stable in your hand and it will zoom up to 36x although this is digital zoom but at 9mp its still gets a reasonable shot for that odd distant picture.
shutter speeds are quick and there is no lag from pressing the button to taking the shot.
have found myself using the auto shoot mode quite a lot as it always takes a great picture (in well lit conditions)and in manual mode its a dream to use and i do like the thumbwheel control method. once your used to it you never need to look at what your doing it just becomes so intuitive.
overall a well specced bridge camera with superb pictures and all the modern features you need and plenty for the techy types as well.
Not great and sent mine back! Sent: 01 October 2008 I am a fan of sony products and recently bought this model after getting hassled from my wife to buy one, as her sister had the older model which did seem to work very well. I liked the look of it and the multi face detection aspect really attracted me to it. I researched and opted for the DSC-H50 but i was really dissapointed. It's not been sent back!
My main gripe is that i can't get a good photo every time, which i could most of the time on my other camera. I was continuously seeing 'processing' on screen as the camera tried to process tha large 9MB jpeg images, so rapid shots were not an option. Whilst the images appeared vibrant on the lovely viewer on the back of the camera, once exported to my computer for printing, i quickly found them to be far less vibrant. The actual image quality differed once exported and it gave false impression due to the bright lcd viewer. It's not my PC as i'm a web designer and my screen is tip top with quality graphics card. If i compared photo's from my old sony to this one in photoshop, there is no question, the older model is far superior.
Yes, the gimmicky smile detection feature is quite smart, but overall i was unhappy with the purchase. Images are too dark, photo's taken inside give off an orange colour to the photo's which is most odd and that's using easy shoot or the other options. I can't get the flash to work when i want it to. :-(
Not for me though and personally, i think there are better cameras out there.
Superb Buy Sent: 07 August 2008 this is the first review I have ever written and this is because this camera is great. Worked within seconds and having two young children we were always missing the best shot. This camera solved our problem as we are able to catch them at the right moment with the multiple shot mode and the quick start. Have only had it for a couple of months upgrading from a previous sony and we are so glad we did. I have not found it wanting in any area and well worth the money
Sony Dsc H50 Sent: 28 July 2008 Great camera and the zoom you would not believe,so many settings takes time to sort them all out, battery life is not the best but only on the 3rd charge i will get a second and it has to be sony camera will not work other makes. Very happy i got this camera. Amazon service and delivery right on the mark.
Cheap and cheerful Sent: 15 July 2008 Pros:
- great tilting screen;
- lightweight;
- quick focusing and 15x optical zoom;
- menus are easy to use;
- impressive battery life;
- you can stick your Sony Ericsson mobile's memory stick into the camera with an adapter;
- good quality images, sharp, colourful and bright ok for the price range;
- SteadyShot that greatly reduces shake at high zoom;
- the Movie mode records video of better quality than my 2 year old camcorder!
Cons:
- THAT wheel dial - it's impossible to use, inconsistent and every other reviewer on the web hates it too - Sony please change this asap;
- "feels" a bit fragile, robustness ok but materials don't look very strong; give the kids your old one;
- doesn't come with an HDMI cable - which is Sony proprietary and VERY expensive;
- if you want to buy a filter to protect the lens, again Sony proprietary and VERY expensive;
- 9MP and 15x zoom is not the highest you can get for this price;
- the corner distortion is massive - big blur zones near the four corners at wide zoom, this is normal for any 15x zoom lens but quite noticeable nonetheless - you need to stick your subjects in the center of each image.
