excellent first DSLR Sent: 31 December 2008 Just got this camera and have to say am really impressed with it so far, It is definitely a step up from my previous camera a dsc v1 by sony, so far have only shot about 150 pictures with it all in RAW format only to allow for working in photoshop easier.
The battery life is very good after one charge and 150 pictures it is still on 66% charge and this includes all the playing around with the camera i have been doing.
I can really comment on the quality of the photos as i have only just started to get the hang of it but they do look very good quality.
I also have a tamron 70 300 lens with it which seems ok and certainly allows me to take some long distance pictures.
The last item i got with the camera is two 4gb sandisk ultra 3 cards which each hold around 250 raw files on them or about 190 raw and jpeg pictures on each one.
I would highly recomend this as a first DSLR.

Excellent.... Sent: 17 December 2008 I'm new to DSLR's and decided to take the plunge after wanting more from my digital camera and gaining a greater interest in photography in general. After speaking to numerous people who had experience in DSLR's, they all seemed to recommend Nikon and Canon as slightly superior to Sony. However, because of the spec compared to the Nikon D40 (which was the alternative I was going for), I decided to take the plunge in the belief that it's not so much the body that matters but rather the lens in the long term. I have to say that I'm not disappointed.
The Camera is slightly bigger than the Nikon D40 due to the bigger LCD screen but it still fits comfortably in the hand. I particularly liked the grip which has a nice soft touch to it. I have had the camera for two months now and I've taken photos in a botanical garden, some scenic shots and some night shots of Christmas lights. Of all the shots I've taken, I can see a notable difference in quality over a compact digital camera.
For those who are new to DSLR's, I would highly recommend getting a UV filter which clips onto the front of the lens to protect it from getting dust and from scratches. I believe Amazon sell a set of three filters for £14.99 or thereabouts. I would also recommend getting a camera bag (I got a Crumpler pretty boy) which fits the camera nice and neatly; a book to learn the basics and more advanced settings and a 4gb memory card. Although it may appear expensive, they are worthwhile and necessary when you are out and about.
Overall, I would go with a Sony for its quality and good value for money. Yes, people would always say Canon's are better but remember its all about the lens not the body! You can always save the money that you would save getting the Sony and put it towards a nice lens (or Crumpler bag!) in the future.
Now I see the difference Sent: 30 November 2008 When I first got this I started thinking "What have I done.". A lot of cash for a camera.
This being my first DSLR I expected all the features etc, but being for a new hobby it seems quite expensive for the quality of picture.
Then I started zooming in on the photos and now I see the difference. Having used cameras with x megapixels before i was aware that this is not a good way of rating a camera. Its ability to focus under different conditions and take clear pictures is paramount and is made all the more easier with quality equipment. I cannot compare this to other DSLR cameras, I do not have the experience, but I am now very happy that I decided to pay a bit more for a piece of kit that will give me many hours of happiness.
Used it for the first time today 29 11 08 Sent: 29 November 2008 Took Delivary of my new Sony A200k a couple of days ago and have used it for the first time today (29/Dec) I must admit I nearly didn't buy one as I was sold on the Fuji 9600 to begin with, not wanting to take the full leap as it were!
I ended up on my first shoot taking over 50 frame in relativly low light with stunning results. The mist was just looming over Loche Erne (NI) and it was very eerie, the detail was pretty good since it was only in auto and I hadn't had time to play around with it. The colours of Autumn were very rich in browns & gold, a bit of a tapestry. The shots were very crisp at full zoom, only wish I had bought a longer lense to acompany the package. The controls were a bit fiddly to begin with but soon got the hang of it and I did'nt even read the manual.
It's early days but I think I have got a damm fine camera!

Creaking lens Sent: 21 November 2008 Unfortunately, the lens reveals how the camera can be sold so cheaply. The made in China lens Lens kit on the A200 creaks when rotating the zoom. I returned the camera thinking this was a fault. But the second camera does the same. Not what I would expect of precision made equipment, come on Sony.
