Good sound qualty and great value Rating stars Sent: 05 January 2009
I was given a 4th generation IPod Nano for Christmas and was *very* disappointed and surprised by the scandalously bad sound quality - how can an mp3 costing over £100 sound this bad even if the aesthetics and user interface are top notch.

It didn't take long to realise that the headphones were probably the biggest problem. After reading a few reviews I decided CX 300 headphones in black from Amazon (or more accurately IndigoStarFish) were a good balance between price and quality. They arrived today and I'm not disappointed.

I have a fairly eclectic (random?) musical taste and can confirm that Eminem, the Manics, Radiohead, Kate Rusby, Juliet Turner and Johny Cash all sound very good on these headphones - whereas before they sounded distorted (Eminem, Manics) or tinny (the other stuff). Afraid I can't vouch for classical or spoken word however.

For £17 then I think these sound fantastic. To get better you would have to spend a lot, lot more.

To reiterate some other points made in other reviews:
    - Experiment with the different earpiece covers provided to get the right fit, then ensure the earpiece is pushed well in to your ear.
    - Use your EQ settings to get the best results. On my Nano I found bass-heavy stuff sounds best with EQ set to "Flat" or even "Off" - you still get a rich sound and the Nano just can't drive that much bass without distortion. Check out wikipedia for a discussion of the bass distortion problems in G3 and G4 Nano's. For everything else I tried the "Rock" setting gives the kind of sound I like.

Provided I don't suffer the reliability problems mentioned in some other reviews I will consider these a very good purchase.

Excellent product at a good price Rating stars Sent: 26 December 2008
Ordered these to replace the standard earphones with the Blackberry - very pleased. Sound quality is astonishing from such tiny phones - even the bass sounds half decent. Thoroughly recommended.

Great little earphones Rating stars Sent: 24 December 2008
Bought these for £16 and received in 3 days. The sound quality is excellent - bass is deep and the sound is clear - much better than the standard earphones that come with iPods/iPhones. They fit well in the ear and stay there much longer. One has to remember these are not £200 high-end headphones so expectations have to be reasonable! I also bought the Creative Labs EP-630/A for £6 and the Sennheiser's are definitely much much better.

Compared with the Sony EX300.... Rating stars Sent: 12 December 2008
Based on my experience now of having used both of these headphones (Sennheiser CX300 Eco Ear Canal Headphones Black and the Sony MDR-EX300SLB In-Ear Headphones with 13.5mm Driver Unit) side by side extensively, here are the good and bad points for both:

    - the CX300 block the environment noise out better than the Sony
    - the CX300 is a better fit and plugs in to the ear more snuggly, the Sony becomes loose after a while, regardless of which of the three sizes of end plugs I use
    - I fall asleep watching iplayer on my iphone some nights, and the CX300 is more comfortable to sleep on!
    - they are both very similar in sound quality, but if you compare them carefully side by side using the same player (I use my dell soundbar with two headphone output jacks to test this) you'll see that the Sony has a slightly richer sound, mostly clearer better base
    - I spend more time untangling the cable on the Sony set compared with the CX300. The cable on the Sony feels more 'plasticky', the cable on the CX300 feels more 'rubbery'.

    My conclusion:
If you really need the better sound then Sony's for you. It comes with more bits (box, tidy case and extension cable which you need) which is probably why you pay more. I can tell you if I lost both and I could only get one to replace them... VERY difficult choice, but I'd maybe very likely pay extra and buy the Sony.

Having said all this, overall the CX300 deserves the five stars, where as I've rated the Sony four out of five.
