Disappointing - 3 reasons not to buy this Sent: 08 January 2009 My one arrives and it looked great - its has optical out for audio, hdmi out, 2 scarts, Tv ariel - everything look great then it comes to using it. It is great how it tells you the picture quality and strength but there are 3 things which made me instantly send it back:
1) It cannot record 2 programmes simultaneously like HUMAX machines (which are cheaper & better). You can ONLY WATCH the programme currently beuing recorded - you cannot even browse the menu while it is recording a show. What is being recorded is on the screen and one the screen for good until it finishes or you press 'stop recording'.
2) The menu list is irritating and hard to scroll with a big block on the right of the screen displaying a logo - waste of space.
3) Volume control didnt work.
There are better machine out there and I STRONGLY recommend thinking beyond this machine because at £200 it is no deal at all.
Annoying and clunky Sent: 02 January 2009 Just received this unit and ill be returning it today. Needed a cheap replacement for my Humax (which was my 4th PVR) and after reading the reviews decided to try this one. Wish i hadnt, whilst the freeview picture quality is good the user interface belongs in the dark ages, it makes the Humax positively shine.
Large annoying advert aside (which takes up half the screen) the EPG is slow, hard to read and trying to record a programme is a joke (requires 3 ok's and you have to wait for the machine to think about it) Also, theres no search function so if you want to record a programme 3 or 4 days ahead you have to use the annoying EPG to scroll through all the programmes in between, very difficult due to the stupid and pointless advert....why advertise magazines???!!?? Further, there's no volume control so you have to use both the TV remote and the panasonics during normal use..rubbish.
I use panasonic HDD/DVD commercial machines at work and thought i would pick up the remote an be away...how wrong i was, this just seems to have a mind of its own with the direct navigation button seemingly useless and to access recorded programmes on the HD you have to enter menu.
Havent tried to record to DVD as im so disillusioned with the machine.
Back in its box it goes.
Ideal first DVD recorder Sent: 13 November 2008 Have been looking around for a DVD recorder for quite some time and final decided to go with the Panasonic EX768EBK. Have had it now for about 3 weeks and am very happy with the results. Its easy to set up and although i am only using it with an old tv the picture is excelent. When i do eventualy upgrade the tv the recorder has enough features to be compatable with almost any hi Def TV with upscaling to match the performance. Recording is a doddle just select from the freeview listing and it even alows you to adjust the timings manualy if required. I am only in a medium signal strength for freeview but it is crystal clear and the pausing and play of live TV is great. Its a great piece of equipment and all for £175. Cant wait to get the new TV now.
A joy to use Sent: 10 November 2008 I bought this to go with a Panasonic 42" Plasma. The upscaling on DVDs works well and I've no idea how blu-ray could be '4 times better'. The recorder is easy to use and there are significant improvements in this compared with an early model. I particularly like the 'series record' function and the way it saves all the episodes of a series in a group folder with just one click. I had a good experience with the free delivery from Amazon of both items - but had to shop elsewhere for a Cambridge HDMI cable - worth getting from Richer Sounds.
