CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Also get a USB (mini) cable! It's a 'must'. Rating stars Sent: 14 December 2008
I won't be long - enough reviews are available here, so let me just add a couple of things: you'll definitely need a USB (mini) cable with your Garmin Sat Nav, because

1) with a USB (mini) cable, you CAN recharge your Garmin Sat Nav with your PC/Mac, which is not clearly mentioned in the user's manual. Remember, your Sat Nav doesn't come with this cable or an AC adapter (you need to buy them separately!), so you can't recharge the battery until you connect it with the vehicle power cable.

2) with this cable, you can also download the latest map, update the software, and configure the Sat Nav via Garmin's website. You'll need to do all this (and it's simple) if you want draw out the maximum performance from your Sat Nav!

Hope this helps!

Poor mapping, useless traffic updates Rating stars Sent: 12 December 2008
Very unimpressive considering how long this GPS technology has been around, I would have expected a lot more.

The unit is basic for the price, although the mapping does include the whole of Europe, apparently...

I updated the mapping software to 2009 and have, to date, found major trunk route improvements which are open already (pre-November 2008) but are not on the updated 2009 maps, this could be very tricky if you didn't know the roads.

Postcode searches seem to be okay, but where the postcode is unavailable or unrecognised (why, when it's a good postcode?), using the "Spell City" function, followed by the road name, has sent me to addresses several miles away from the address I've entered. On one occasion, the unit insisted in telling me the road I wanted was not in the town I was inputting, but was in a small village seven miles away, this despite showing the correct road on the overview map in the town I was entering when I checked. Bizarre.

The traffic updates are worse than useless around London, with roads showing up as closed (the A3) for a whole day when they're not, delays all over the place in and around London that just disappear when I choose to ignore the information and drive through the area, and other incidents that are being broadcast on the local radio stations as traffic problems but never show on the unit. If you can't trust the information it has no value.

I'm also underwhelmed by the number of times I've been sent down side roads in London which are no through routes, and have been so for years. I have repeatedly been told to turn right/left where to do so would be a violation of the traffic signs - no right turn, etc.

"Faster" routes seem to be always set using dual carriageways and motorways for preference, even to the point of adding many miles to a journey of 10 - 30 miles using the alternative A and B roads.

"Shorter" routes sometimes take the best route, but will also include impassable fords, roads that aren't even there and, as mentioned already, send you into dead-ends.

Keep the map book handy!

I would recommend buying the cheapest no frills SatNav you can put up with until these guys get their collective acts together. This unit simply isn't worth the money.

Highly Recommended - Easy to use and brilliant navigation Rating stars Sent: 11 December 2008
I have just purchased the Garmin Nuvi 255WT Satellite nagigation System with built in Traffic.

I am really pleased with it, its clear, easy to follow, and looks great.. I was worried about which one to buy.. i was blinded by technology and just did not know which one to choose.. this is my first Sat Nav, and I have no friends who could recommend any specific one to me, so i just had to "go with it". I looked at all the reviews on here and thought that this one looked the best, I also took the free delivery option.. and the exclusive Amazon special offer with a free Leather case.

The free delivery option is not for those in a hurry to recieve this item.. !! after a week of waiting.. i was getting a little impatient.. as i just wanted to get it and us it.. and wish I had paid for the delivery... or even that I had just gone to Halfords and got one.!!.(except this was £30 more at Halfords than Amazon), The case came first.. and two days later the Sat Nav came.

The Sat nav was worth the wait.. its brilliant, bright clear screen.. and i just dont know how i lived without it.. !!

for us girlies.. the road marked out to follow is in a Pinky/Purple colour.. which is always a bonus.. !! the built in traffic is also a must have for anyone doing long journeys on the motorway..

The only thing you need to watch is the speed... the sat nav is about 5miles an hour out... so you are going faster than the Sat Nav tells you.. !! so be careful.. !!

Also I found the speed cameras were a little "out".. on the M25 it said 60mph on one stretch of road, however the Sat Nav said "50 mph" and kept beeping at me the hole time.. which was rather annoying.. !! and you cant stop it.. unless you pull out the cable !! which is hard to do when your driving.. !!

Also you need to Purchase a cable to down load from the internet.. !! this does NOT COME IN THE BOX.. its only about £6 at Halfords... but it ment that I had to go to Halfords to buy one.. or you could of course purchase off here.. and wait for it to come.. which was a right pain.. I wish it had told me this on the product information. I also purchased from halfords a home charging kit.. as this also did not come in the box.. SO MAKE SURE YOU THINK ABOUT THIS WHEN ORDERING.

I have given this item 5* rating, as i think it is really really good.. and im so glad i brought it.. like i said.. i just dont know how i lived without it.

If you want something that is easy to use, looks good and directs well.. this is the one for you..

And as noted before the Pink/Purple road mapping.. is a must for all Girlies... WELL DONE GARMIN FOR THINKING OF US GIRLIES.. !!

Just wish i could change the colour of the car.. !! but thats real picky hu.. !!

Better than a Tom Tom but behind Navman in every respect Rating stars Sent: 10 December 2008
Bought one of these to replace my 6-year old Navman ICN 510. The 255 WT has not moved the art forward one bit. The software is clunky and the routes defy logic and are either via a motorway at all costs ( on the fastest option) or on the back roads from hell on the shortest option. No way of selecting a balance as per the Navman. Also it gives you street names for the next road but no road No so can confuse things if you are following street signs in London Tried a Tom Tom XL - it was tno better so both returned to Amazon who provided an excellent service as usual; in the end bought a Navman S80 which gives a selectable balance of A/B roads and motorways and lets you delete unmarked road options. The routing offered as a result is much better - the only reason I can see that Tom Tom and Garmin are capturing the market is that they have used saturation advertising while Navman do not advertise - on my experience the Navman is streets ahead - try the Garmin then the Tom Tom and then have a play with a Navman - look at the route options and see what is available - you will then see what I'm talking about - just beware some of the high street store staff - they are so biased towards Tom Tom/Garmin its not funny (I suspect there may be some incentives from the manufacturers). Try and have a play and make your own mind up. In sum - it did not work for me so I bought a Navman - now happy

Fantastic Satnav Garmin Nuvi 255WT - Just Buy One Rating stars Sent: 27 November 2008
This is a great satnav. I had to drive to several seperate locations from Kent to East London to South East London to North London and back to Kent in a day. I would have got totally lost and stressed trying to rely on maps or printed directions. This unit was brilliant and was spot on and simple to use.
Registered and updated to 2009 maps worked O.K but took a long time, circa 5 hours all together. Had a small problem after the map updates as the unit thought I was in Central London for some reason. However, just went into Tools and Reset / Restore to Default Settings and that corrected the problem. Would highly recommend.
