Love this gadget! Sent: 10 July 2010 I bought the Archos to wach movies at the gym and with the battery extension that allows me to hook it on any TV, I could also plug it and watch my favourite series on holidays. Great purchase :-)
Archos Sent: 02 July 2010 Don't be fooled by Archos prices as you do not get much for your money. These thing are great when they are'nt freezing up which happens often, but EVERYTHING has to be paid for as an extra.
You need another bit to connect to a tv, another bit to record on to it from a DVD player, then you need to down load this and that which is all paid for as an extra, in the end it will cost a great deal of money for not very much.
When you do get a problem, no point trying to get help on line as you won'nt get a reply.
I have regretted ever wasting money on it.
Don't waste your money on this! Sent: 27 May 2010 I made the mistake of ordering this Archos 5 media player. I was attracted to the large storage at a good price and also the high resolution but here are the facts...
The touch screen is terrible compared to todays standards, it's resistive, not capacitive. You will feel like throwing it against the wall after a few minutes, it's very sticky.
The battery is attrocious and you can only charge it using USB which takes an eternity, it will deplete after a few hours of use.
You get next to nothing with it, no wall charger (you have to buy one at an extra cost) and if you want it to play all movie or sound formats, you have to pay for the codecs!! You don't even get a case or cover for it.
It's huge, the actual size of the player is brick like compared to any apple products, there's no way it'll fit in your pocket.
The device does have some good points, such as being able to play internet radio and being able to stream content from your pc but these don't outweigh the bad points.
I thought about selling this and investing in the new android operating Archos model instead, but after reading reviews for that, it's too big a risk. I have instead opted for a smartphone with better specs and features.
Good but wont play you tube videos on the web Sent: 22 April 2010 Bought this at a reduced price £129, refurb or ex display model, although mine looked brand new. I have previously had a couple of 605 wi fi models but smaller capacity so wanted a bigger memory.
The good thing with this model is that it is a slicker design as the buttons on the previous model due get stratched and damanged but on this one everything is touch screen. They also provide the web browser and internet radio plug ins for free rather than having pay for them. I wouldnt bother with the cinema plug in as you can get plenty of films in the format that this unit plays and as before the video quality and sound on the unit is excellent. Also photos on this unit look good and you can flick through them like a book which is a nice touch.
I am not sure of the speed on which it gets onto the web as at the moment it doesnt appear much faster than my previous 605. I never bought the games so cannot comment.
Dont buy this unit if you want to view videos on you tube or google video or other sights as it does not support flash 10 and despite scouring the internet there is no work around and we are all waiting for archos to gives an firmware update to overcome this.
I would not pay full price for the unit as I know there is the newer android unit now available but as i didnt i am pleased and I will give the other 605 to the kids for long trips in the car or holidays.
Dissatisfaction Sent: 06 April 2010 I first encountered Archos over 4 years ago when I purchased its Gmini (music/photos/games/video) player which was a superb bit of equipment and beautifully engineered and still functions well. The only thing that considered me to consider the Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet was the introduction of WiFi.
When I received this new item I was again impressed with its design and robustness although some may find it rather bulky. Initially it was up to my expectations in all respects providing good reproduction of sound and video (the sound may well be better than "good" as my hearing is not what it used to be!) I like the ability to use a stylus on the responsive touchscreen as my fingers are on the bulky side. Archos don't seem to mention a stylus as an option in their specification. I transferred with the ease all my music and photo files from my PC by copying and pasting. I gather the recommended way is to sync using Windows Media Player. I had no difficulty in connecting to my house WiFi which functioned faultlessly. It was also good to have some preloaded widgets. However when I downloaded further widgets from the recommended Opera site these would not operate coming up with the message "final type not recognized"
This is where my satisfaction turned to dissatisfaction. Finally following 3 to 4 e-mails to Archos, other than the routine automatic reply stating that I would hear from their technical department within 2 days, I finally received a human generated reply claiming that this matter should be dealt with by the suppliers Amazon. I subsequently contacted Amazon who rightly claimed that they did not deal with technical matters. I was therefore left in limbo.
Another matter that has not been resolved relates to the battery state "monitor" i.e. a small battery icon with 5 bars. Understandably the battery life in between charges is very much dependent on the type of usage, the power consumption for instance been much greater when watching TV online as opposed to listening to music when the screen is blank. I did notice however that in use the battery indicator would initially go from the 5th to the 3rd bar. More disconcerting however was the fact that it would then go from the 3rd to the final red bar seemingly in one jump and soon after as would be expected shutdown. In my experience the monitor can therefore be very misleading as far as judging the useful remaining usage time.
Disappointing also is the fact that the software does not seem to support BBC Iplayer. In fairness to Archos nowhere in their specification to my knowledge do they claim that it will. Another useful function would be the ability to link to Microsoft Outlook Contacts.
With regret I felt that I had no option but to return the unit largely due to Archos's poor customer service. Amazon I find to be a very fair and reliable supplier that I would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone.
As an indicator of my continuing faith in Archos as a manufacturer, in this instance let down by their customer care service, I am currently investigating the Archos 5 Internet Tablet (or possibly even the Apple iPod touch). Am I the first to find difficulty in distinguishing between the two "5" versions?
